If you go black, you can never go back! /Negro eterno!!

If you go black, you can never go back? Put your curls together, and let me explain to you what I will be talking about before you get all excited. I am talking about hair color. Last Sunday, I met with the curly hair guru Antonio Berducci in one of his stops in LA for a must needed haircut and I also wanted my hair to be colored, I wanted a change of image. I feel like I am ready to try new stuff with my hair, it’s now or never, why not? at the end of the day it’s just hair and I have been taking really good care of it, so I deserve it, or I thought so. 

At the salon, Antonio cut my hair, using the Devachan method that I love so much, he saw a picture of a hair color that I wanted, and then he goes: “no honey, it’s not gonna happen, not today in one process and probably not ever, I will not put in risk your beautiful, long hair, your hair is too dark, plus you still have henna deposit on it.”

S, if you go black you can never go back? Is this a myth? No. If you go black you can’t ever go back at least not on your own. You would have to have a professional take a look at what has been done to you and perhaps do a test strand to see how your hair color lifts. 90 % of the time going black is irreversible without causing visual damage to the hair, especially curly hair, Antonio says. If you over-process the hair it will dry out and eventually break, so be careful with your color choices. If you want to go black don’t use a permanent color. Once you go black you’ve gone bankrupt with your hair, there is nothing else you’re able to do but keep dying it black or starting over.

What are some safe options? You can go to a colorist who can do a test strand and see how your color lifts. However Black is the hardest color to lift and being told that you’re not able to lift that color without damaging your texture is a big possibility. In that case you must stop coloring your regrowth hair with permanent color- this will take time as oppose to going for the big chop. You will have to hang on to your color for a while longer so cover that regrowth with semi or demi permanent color depending on the level of your greys. Once you have enough regrowth where you feel comfortable cutting off the black-dyed ends –cut them off and go to a professional colorist that will help you reach the color you want, keeping in mind the health of your hair and what you have in store for the future of your hair color.–Antonio did some highlights on my hair, to actually see how my hair will react to it and if it would turn any weird color, and the result wasn’t as bad as he expected, the root got one color and the ends (the hair that has more dye and henna deposit) got another color, but not as bad as he thought -and I actually liked it-. Antonio uses the Pintura technique:

The reason we paint color on curls, is because curls are born in a suspended expectrun of the head, curls are not attached to your scalp, they are dancing upon your scalp, so if we paint them, they will be flowing and projecting. I don’t use foil, because curls are not straight or flat and the final result is a stripe, curls won’t dance like it supposed to, when you use foil, both sidea of the curls get colored (you don’t need a inside hightlight) and you don’t need that, plus there is the extra heat factor “over process” that curls definitely don’t need. I paint the curls, because curls don’t need to be colored on both sides, curls are suspended, and the reflection of light comes from the outside in, not from the inside out ” the light reflects on the top of the curls” ..Curls need to be painted in the way it grows from your scalp!!

 

What about henna? If you’re a curly girl that likes to have fun with your color then Henna is not for you. Henna has sulfur and natural metals like silver in it, which does not allow you to change from dark to light. It is the hardest to remove from the hair. Henna also has a high PH but is not hydrating as it dries out the hair. If you try to lift color out of dry hair it’s going to break- not to mention how long it takes for you to get that curl looking healthy again after using such a permanent method of hair coloring. Negro eterno? te preguntaras, pero agarrate la peluca y déjame explicarte antes que sigas de mal pensada y te emociones. Estoy hablando de color de pelo. El domingo pasado visite el gurú del cabello rizado Antonio Berducci en una de sus paradas en Los Ángeles para un corte de cabello que necesitaba a gritos y también quería un cambio de imagen o de color. Estoy en una etapa en la que me siento super preparada para tomar retos y cambios con mi cabello, es ahora o nunca, ¿por qué no? al final del día es sólo cabello y lo he cuidado muy bien, así que me lo merezco, o eso pensé. 
En el salón, Antonio me cortó el cabello y le dio un poco de forma para que no se viera tan cuadrado, utilizando el método Devachan que tanto amo, vio una imagen de un color de pelo que yo quería, y luego me dijo: no mi amor, no va a suceder, no hoy en un proceso y probablemente nunca llegues a ese color, no voy a poner en riesgo tu hermoso cabello largo, el cual es demasiado oscuro por color y deposito de Henna.

Entonces, estoy condenada a un negro eterno (o color oscuro) esto no es en realidad un mito? Esto es una realidad, al menos no sin la ayuda de un especialista, que primero deberá de hacer varias pruebas con mechones de cabello para determinar como se levanta el color, nos dice Antonio. En un 90 % de los casos el color negro es irreversible sin causar daño visual para el cabello, especialmente el cabello rizado. Si el cabello esta sobre procesado, se secara y eventualmente romperá, así que ten cuidado con tus opciones de color. Si quieres llevar el cabello negro no utilizes un color permanente. Una vez que pintas tu cabello de color negro, estas condenada a ir a la quiebra, ya que tendrás que seguir pintándolo de este color.

¿Cuáles son algunas opciones seguras si quiero un cambio de color? Como dije, ir donde un colorista. Sin embargo el color negro es el color más difícil de levantar y de hacerlo sin causarle daños visibles a la textura de tu cabello. En el caso de que quieras cambiar de color, deberás dejar de teñirte y dejar que el cabello crezca natural y eventualmente cortar las puntas para sacar el color definitivamente. Tendrás que aferrarte a tu color por un tiempo más largo y si tienes canas usar solo semi o demi permanente. Luego ir donde un colorista tomando en cuenta que lo mas importante es la salud del cabello y los colores de cabello que quieres para el futuro. – Antonio hizo unas pruebas con mechones (luces, rayos) para ver como levantaba el color, y aunque las expectativas eran bajas y poco alentadoras, el resultado no fue tan mal como el esperaba.  Antonio utiliza la técnica de Pintura:

La razón por la que pintamos el color en los rizos, es porque los rizos nacen en un espectro de suspensión en la cabeza, los rizos no están adheridos al cuero cabelludo, los rizos están bailando sobre el cuero cabelludo, por lo que si lo pintamos tendrán movimiento y proyección.  No uso papel de aluminio porque los rizos no son rectos o lacios, y el resultado final es una raya, cuando se usa papel de aluminio los rizos no bailan como se supone que hagan, ademas que el cabello toma color por ambos lados, cosa que no es necesario, la reflexión de la luz viene de afuera hacia adentro, no desde dentro hacia fuera “la luz refleja en la parte superior de los rizos”. Ademas esta el factor de calor extra que los rizos definitivamente no necesitan. El cabello rizado necesita ser pintado en la forma en que crece desde el cuero cabelludo!! 

¿Qué pasa con la henna? Si eres una chica con el cabello rizado que le gusta divertirse con su color, la henna no es para ti. Henna tiene azufre y metales naturales como la plata, que no permiten cambiar de oscuro a claro. Es la más difícil de eliminar del cabello. Henna también tiene un pH alto, pero no es hidratante y seca el cabello. Si se intenta levantar el color en un cabello seco, se romperá. Sin mencionar cuánto tiempo toma para conseguir un cabello hidratado después de un color tan permanente. Si usas Henna para pintar tu cabello, olvida tus sueños de cambiar de color!!
