Discover the best of Letterkenny, Ireland in a day! Located in the heart of County Donegal, Letterkenny is a lively town that blends small-town charm with big adventures. I visited while attending the TBEX travel conference, and it turned out to be one of the most memorable stops of my Ireland trip.

Getting There from Dublin

Letterkenny sits about 4 to 5 hours from Dublin, easily reachable by Bus Éireann, John McGinley Coaches, or by car if you prefer a scenic drive through Ireland’s countryside. Bus tickets usually range from €20–€25 one way, and driving gives you the freedom to stop along the way for photos or a coffee break.

Why It’s Worth Visiting

Often seen as the gateway to Donegal’s wild beauty, Letterkenny offers a perfect mix of comfort and adventure. It’s close to incredible sites like Grianán of Aileach, Fort Dunree, and of course, the unforgettable Wild Alpaca Way. With cozy cafés, friendly locals, and stunning coastal scenery just a short drive away, it’s the ideal base for exploring northwest Ireland.

The Wild Alpaca Way – A Highlight of Donegal

My adventure began with a visit to The Wild Alpaca Way, a magical experience that lets you walk alongside alpacas while overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Located on the Inishowen Peninsula, this activity combines gentle animals, breathtaking views, and a dose of pure joy. The alpacas are calm and friendly, making it a fun and relaxing way to take in Donegal’s dramatic coastline.

Brunch with a View at The Grind Café

After the alpaca walk, I stopped by The Grind Café, located near Fort Dunree. It’s the kind of place where you can refuel with a delicious brunch while soaking in the view. I loved the relaxed vibe — good coffee, homemade pastries, and that peaceful Donegal energy.

Right next door, Fort Dunree offers another dose of history and scenery. Once a military fort, it now houses a museum and panoramic viewpoints that capture the rugged beauty of the area.

A Stop at Grianán of Aileach

Later that afternoon, I visited Grianán of Aileach, an ancient stone fort perched high on a hill. The views stretch across several counties — Donegal, Derry, and Tyrone — and it’s one of those places that truly makes you feel the magic of Ireland.

Next Stop: Sligo

After a few wonderful days in Letterkenny for TBEX, it was time to continue my Irish journey toward Sligo, another gem along the Wild Atlantic Way (stay tuned for that post soon!).
